The Churches of Leiden

Pieterskerk

Beneath the organ is a view to the former baptismal chapel, and the monument to the Pilgrims' minister John Robinson, who is buried somewhere in the church. The Robinson monument is placed in the wall where there was a door in pre-Reformation times. A new-born infant brought through this door could enter the church both literally and spiritually through baptism. The shape of the chapel is a partial octagon, recalling the medieval idea that baptism represented the eighth stage of creation, after the seven recorded in Genesis. Along the wall between the organ and the baptismal chapel is the original location of Lucas van Leyden's triptych painting of The Last Judgement (now in the Municipal Museum 'De Lakenhal.'). The Last Judgement was hung over or near a special pew for the Leiden magistrates.
