Among the numerous memorials to civic leaders and university professors is
the neo-classic bust by L. Royer, depicting Johannes Hendricus van der Palm,
who died in 1840. Contrasting with the simple monument and portrait is the
neo-gothic plaster niche that now further contrasts sharply with the brick
wall. Originally the brick walls were plastered as well, but the historic
surface was chipped away in an early 20th-century restoration that probably
unwittingly caused the destruction of wall paintings hidden by later
whitewashing.
